This has been, without a doubt, the most toxic work environment I've ever experienced. The work pace is relentlessly high, making it impossible to keep up without constantly feeling overwhelmed. The owner is an absolute control freak, micromanaging every single detail and demonstrating a complete inability to delegate work effectively. Their mood swings are unpredictable and create an incredibly unstable atmosphere, leaving everyone walking on eggshells. The onboarding process was a total failure, offering no real guidance. You're constantly in a no-win situation: if you ask questions, you're interrupting colleagues, but if you don't, you're deemed too passive. This contradictory feedback is a constant source of frustration. There's never any praise, only criticism, no matter how much effort you put in. To make matters worse, the company uses a time tracker, but the hours you log are never considered enough. You're frequently expected to work 10+ hours a day, yet you're only paid for eight. This level of exploitation, combined with the mobbing from the CEO, makes for a truly toxic workplace where burnout is inevitable within a few months. I strongly advise anyone considering working here to look elsewhere.

As a publishing company, we have firm monthly deadlines, which means all of us are accountable for managing our time effectively, producing quality work and collaborating with other team members with minimal supervision and without friction. We care about our staff and that is evident in the long tenure and high internal employee satisfaction scores. Everyone works on a shift schedule to collaborate with other team members in real time and manage work-life balance. Unfortunately this approach did not work for you and we’re sorry to hear that your own proposal for a flexible schedule approach did not meet your expectations and that it contributed to burnout and a feeling of overwhelm. We made adjustments, restructured project plans and provided support to help you meet expectations during your probation period. We recognise that every individual has different working styles and does not appreciate that approach. We wish you every success in finding a role that’s the right fit for your preferred work style in a team .

Pros

I thought I'd take the time to write this review because working for Autism Parenting Magazine (APM) feels genuinely meaningful. It isn’t just a job, it’s the work that matters and knowing that the content we create helps parents and caregivers feel supported, informed, and less alone is a positive benefit of being part of the organisation. This is also true for the team with which I work. They’re thoughtful, respectful, and easy to work with (including the CEO), and there’s a strong sense of empathy woven into the culture. I appreciate how open and collaborative the working environment is. Ideas are welcomed, communication between departments and the community we serve is clear, and there’s an understanding of the importance of work-life balance and flexibility. APM has been going since 2012 and there are a number of colleagues who have been at APM for several years, so they must be getting something right. Furthermore, I feel trusted to do my work well and am proud to contribute to an organisation that aligns its values so closely with its mission. Thus far, it’s been a positive and fulfilling experience, and I’m happy to be able to share my expertise to help take the organisation forward, so that it's able to help even more people that have autism as part of their world.

Pros

Strong company values and a positive, supportive culture. APM genuinely values work-life balance, full-time employees are expected to work a standard 8-hour day. There are good training opportunities and room for professional growth. It’s a fast-paced environment where you learn a lot and gain exposure to different areas of the business. Supportive leadership and a collaborative team atmosphere Work expectations are clearly defined from the start, including the use of Hubstaff for time and activity tracking, which is outlined in both the job description and employment contract. This transparency helps set clear boundaries and promotes accountability and fairness across the team.

Cons

It’s a fast-paced environment, and during busy periods or launches the work can feel quite intense.
