Pros
I’ve worked as a social services director at The Tower of Kuhio Park for 6 years and perhaps the thing I like most about the job is that no day is ever the same. I serve a resident population of close to 3,000 representing 26 different cultures, and work with dozens of service providers to help meet the needs of this low-income, predominately Pacific Islander population. It’s exciting and fulfilling work, and yes, it is sometimes stressful. It is a job for someone whose biggest reward is serving others.
Cons
In 2013, social services program at the Towers and 90-some other low-income housing developments across the nation was aptly brought under 501 (c) (3) status and renamed Better Tomorrows. While the transition seemed an adjustment for some who’ve written somewhat negative reviews here in Glassdoor, I had worked for non-profit organizations for many years prior and understood that according to federal law, the structure of NPO has to be much different than a business. NPOs have to be accountable to their funders to be successful, and Better Tomorrows has artfully created standards that set it among the top in the nation.
