Benefits are great, but not enough of an incentive to keep great people from leaving - Anonymous employee Boston Consulting Group Employee Review

Pros

Benefits (full healthcare, dental, vision), Luxury travel amenities, a company that’s doing really interesting work benefitting millions, incredibly bright people that for the most part are also incredibly kind, and an environment that encourages people to think creatively, even if they are not always rewarded for doing so.

Cons

The difference between the consulting side of the business and BST (business services team) is incredible. Often times BST are expected to live up to the expectations and work the same number of hours as the consultants with a fraction of the pay and growth opportunities. There is also a stigma when working on this side of the business that is often near impossible to overcome, meaning many partners just don’t take BST or their input seriously. The salary for BST is also typically far below industry average and the claim is that due to the benefits, the starting salaries are lower, which is all fine and good, but simply cannot compare to other more competitive companies at this point in time. Lastly, the technology is far behind where it should be for a company that is pushing digital transformation so heavily on every company they consult, there is high turnover on BST teams (due mostly to the challenges mentioned above) which leads to toxic work environments and even less work/life balance, and there is a high imbalance of effective managers. Some are the best I’ve ever had and some have no desire to grow their teams. Overall, I’d recommend BCG as a company that can set you up to do well anywhere because it can be an incredibly challenging place to work.

Pros

BCG has top tier benefits, really smart colleagues, good in-office perks, and has a great company reputation. This was a huge part of my experience and has made me go back forth about my decision to leave.

Cons

This is speaking as someone who is not on the consulting side. On my particular team, office politics were very strong with little to no opportunities for people outside of the inner circle to assimilate. More broadly, I feel like the salary trajectory was a little slow, there is a lack of location mobility and and promotions can be hard to come by. Even so, I have personally seen exceptions be made for certain people. More broadly, being located in North America can be difficult since new roles are being open in other regions which is making internal mobility next to impossible. If you have any dissatisfaction with your current team, title, or level - there's a real possibility that you will have to wait multiple years before being able to make meaningful shifts towards your long term career goals.
