Pros

Circonus has a very strong culture of honesty and integrity that's reflected in every aspect of the organization. In the business itself, there is no distinction between customer and user, and the business model is transparent: So-called "dark patterns" of revenue maximization are non-existent. In the product, we built mathematically sound solutions to address customer needs, rather than (unfortunately more common in this space) naive implementations, that add a sales bullet point, but that would have resulted in misleading summary statistics. Data integrity was taken very seriously in my time there, as was operational security. We tried to solve important customer problems in the right way.

Cons

Some NIH syndrome in parts of the technical stack. The product UI never really gelled for me, which took something away from my pride in the product we built.

Pros

The monitoring domain is full of unsolved problems. In particular when it comes to data analytics. IT operations is getting much more complex, and long standing system modelling and prediction problems are still unsolved in the domain. Circonus brings some of the most powerful data analytics methods to the table, and is dedicated to advancing the status-quo even more. As a data-scientist it's a very interesting place to be (if you like hard problems). There is an incredible amount of low level system engineering knowledge and competence in the company. Core components are written in C, work on multiple UNIXes, and are crazy performant even on mediocre hardware. I have profited a lot from open sharing of ideas, and general willingness to help. I learned a lot since I started here. No bullying. No blaming. No ducking away. There is honest dedication to delivering value to the customer, from the management to the engineers. The CEO even contributes code himself. True "lead by example".

Cons

Expect to work independently. Expect to deal with large grown code bases. Expect to read a lot of code. Small company.

Pros

Very little only some of the people I worked with

Cons

EVERYTHING, they have a very limited number of customers, for the first year I worked there we no one could tell me what we did because we didn't have a viable product. Last the new VP of sales (2022) may be the worst human being I ever met
