Pros

Management cares for their employees, everyone attempts to do the "right thing". They do a good job getting high-quality workers, which support the downfalls of upper management and division directors.

Cons

I work at Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso, IN. They train their management well and encourage them to recognize high performing employees with kind, "thankful-for-your-service" letters, only to cover up and soften the reality they overwork their staff and frequently understaff departments in direct and indirect patient care. All departments struggle to complete their workload, putting their JCAHO accreditation at risk. Pay is not competitive compared to surrounding cities making recruitment very difficult and turnover very high. We recently had a large 70+ employee layoff, only to scramble and hire a large amount of people. Patient and employee safety is not priority and they recently reduced the number of security personnel, leaving only one security officer to man a 200+ bed hospital. Nurses at off-site locations are now responsible for their own safety and locking and securing of buildings at night. It is a continuous high-stress environment. I had never worked at a for-profit organization before I came to CHS, and they have left me frustrated with the feeling that I am providing mediocre care, due to large workload. Some departments are so understaffed PTO is denied due to inability to staff shifts. Directors are frequently disappear without warning even when a replacement has not been chosen, leaving unprepared staff to step-up as interim, until a replacement is hired, which may take months to, in rare cases, a year or more.
