Pros

Good job when you're fresh out of college or for a first introduction job. People a nice to work with, onsite gym, expansion (somewhat). Pay is not too bad. Interest groups with a strong focus on LGBT community and that's it. Habitat for Humanity opportunities, health and benefits is somewhat beefy.

Cons

The culture is terrible, too much politics get in the way of a person wanting to advance/ move to a different department. Some supervisors are down right bullies and prey on those who seem shy, stand offish, quiet, or those who want to get their work done. Supervisors come in when they want to will ignore team chat to get coffee or do what they want to. If you actually have questions or notice something's wrong with policy and procedures and you bring it to the supervisor or higher ups attention , you're seen as being out of line and you immediately black balled and muted which travels to every other department while at Disocver. If you have an interview for a different position and don't get the job, your rejection email comes to you months later, if you ask what may have kept you from getting the job you'll never get a response. Information that is vital to your job role is slowly communicated. Supervisors will threaten employees with corrective action for no reason. Discover strives on doing the right thing, but they do the opposite. Leadership seems to be one color across the board and gender. LGBT community gets a lot of focus but other interest groups don't, faith based interest groups were shut down completely. Open door policy for some Department Managers are basically a set up and waste of time, they say that what we talk about is between you and I, but the next day your business is out in the open where all the supervisors know who said what. When Head quarters comes to the facility, DM's and supervisors want the employees to put on an act as if everything is okay so that they give off the impression that they have everything under control when they really don't. Human resources is a clique and they walk around with impression that they're better than tlall the other employees. All they care about is winning the J D Power award, but turns a dead ear on the culture and job practices that go on within the company. I can't fathom why I'm still working for this company.

Pros

One of the most significant advantages of interning at Discover is the opportunity to work with massive, high-stakes financial datasets within a highly collaborative and mentorship-driven culture. Because the company manages millions of consumer accounts, you gain direct experience in how data-driven decisions impact risk management, credit modeling, and fraud detection in real time. The environment is known for being supportive of early-career professionals, offering structured learning paths and exposure to modern cloud-native infrastructures like AWS. Furthermore, the company’s strong focus on work-life balance and a clear pipeline for converting interns to full-time roles makes it an excellent "foot in the door" for anyone looking to build a career in fintech.

Cons

On the other hand, the primary drawback often stems from the inherent bureaucracy and heavy regulation of the banking industry, which can lead to slower project lifecycles and "red tape." You may find that a significant portion of your time is spent on repetitive data cleaning and maintaining legacy reporting systems rather than building the cutting-edge predictive models you might expect. Additionally, because Discover is a massive organization, your scope of work can sometimes feel siloed, making it difficult to see the end-to-end impact of your analysis across different departments. Finally, the current landscape of the industry means that internal shifts or large-scale corporate restructuring can occasionally lead to uncertainty regarding team directions or long-term project stability.
