Pros
In dark times, the client and causes Elle represents has helped me channel my frustration, anger, and uncertainty and made me feel like I could do something about things out of my control.
I've moved from junior support staff to our senior leadership team. Mobility is very possible. I can also say that leadership does talk a great deal about quality of life and works very hard to prioritize the realities of client services with taking care of its employees.
Benefits (if you can take advantage of them) are really what keep many people here, including me - competitive salary and regular raises, unlimited vacation and sick days, flexible hours (if you need them), employer-paid health care, half day fridays year-round, a wellness credit, yearly performance bonus, and 401K matching. And, they treat me like a human, so that's a plus.
Cons
A lot of people come to this agency wanting to do good and make change, but it's really hard. You have to have a lot of resiliency, creativity, and sometimes it's really easy to get burned out or feel disengaged and less than worthwhile because results are hard fought in the impact world, and then you have the state of the world too weighing down on you.
The agency is going through growing pains, which has resulted in several big changes over the past few years so it feels like a startup at times when they've been around for 16+ years.
You have to set your own boundaries, and be really diligent about them to maintain a work/life balance (which is ultimately what leaders at Elle want!), especially if you don't have children or caregiving responsibilities.
