Pros

Overall really nice and committed colleagues and working on important issues.

Cons

Management and higher level management are not well organised and no HR protocols or employee protection rights. There are no grievance mechanisms put in place. Advice to Management Prioritise staff and their needs and ensure high quality benefits and protect their needs. The management should be proactive and supportive and communicate clearly expectations and standards. The org should also be competitive across regional organisationals both in salary and benefits and employee rights.

Pros

The main (and perhaps only) pro of EJF as a company is its admirable mission - protecting the environment and fighting for human rights. It also has a good work/life balance, and the hours aren't too bad.

Cons

I worked at EJF for 8 months. During this time, I can count on one hand the number of times I interacted with my boss, the CEO and co-founder Steve Trent. Due to the company's horizontal structure, Steve was the only person above me, and he never took the time to manage me - or even to be in communication and check my progress. Normally this would be alright, as I am motivated and self-sufficient, but the job required some trips to challenging environments where it was a matter of safety to have the support of my manager. After a tumultuous trip to Senegal, I tried to reach him through his assistant for a check-in, but I kept getting shot down and told he was "too busy." Even after telling Steve I was planning on leaving the company, no one checked in or gave me a call. There was no exit interview and no goodbye at all. I'm proud of the work I did for EJF, but it was a really lonely and confusing experience. I would strongly encourage anyone considering work at an environmental non-profit to look elsewhere.

Pros

I have been consistently impressed by the professionalism and commitment of my team. Everyone works with purpose, collaborates thoughtfully, and brings a high level of expertise to the table. Our team produces high-quality reports and achieves meaningful results that we can be proud of. The work environment encourages learning, critical thinking, and impact-driven action.

Cons

The organization is in an active phase of building and strengthening its internal structures. This creates opportunities to help shape processes, though it may require navigating some ambiguity along the way.
