Pros

Generally I really enjoy the work and the colleagues I work with. I am highly appreciative of the truly flexible working which just makes life so much easier and means when I am working, I'm more focused and 'on it'. Great offices in a central Birmingham location with good transport links. The organisation has great aspirations and is actively working to achieve them. The Commission has in the past year or so refocused its efforts on preventing harm to gamblers and ensuring that operators actively include protection and operational practice that is fair and promotes safety of players and this is a much more human focus which is absolutely right to have.

Cons

Career progression feels completely hamstrung in my case. The organisation is currently going through an HR-led process to harmonise job descriptions in an effort to remove the issues other reviewers have referred to which is a good start. There needs to be considerably more work done to practically embed collaborative working (it's talked about a lot but doesn't actually happen) and diversity. The Board/Exec's beliefs about how well things are going don't necessarily match reality on the ground.

Pros

People are brilliant. People in my team and most of the management. A lot of effort is made by the Executive team to listen to staff and to continuously improve things. Most of them are very down to earth and approachable and they care. I raised a longstanding issue with the Acting CEO and it was addressed really well within 24 hours. I said sorry for taking up her time with something quite trivial compared to all the other tasks she has to do. The reply was so nice. Another occasion, time was given up to give me very useful feedback on a paper I submitted. I learned a lot from that and I really appreciated when it was noticed by the Acting CEO office team that I’d acted on the feedback the next time. It made me feel valued and like the effort I made to improve was worth it.

Cons

The pay is not brilliant for the work you have to do but it is very rewarding to feel like you’ve made a difference. Can be exhausting because resources are stretched and regulation can be a thankless task where you please nobody by doing the right thing. Pension is decent so you have to look at the package I guess.
