Pros
- Fairly flexible schedule
- Strong teamwork among bedside nurses
- Meaningful collaboration with most interdisciplinary team members and providers
- Wide variety of patient populations and medical conditions, great learning environment for new grad nurses
- Many opportunities for continuing education courses and free courses that count towards CEUs
Cons
- Compensation does not keep pace with cost of living in area nor does it adequately match the workload and responsibilities. Raises are not based on performance.
- Patient to nurse ratio is 6:1, despite standards leaning more towards a 5:1 ratio, especially with higher acuity patients
- Ongoing performance issues with certain staff members are not always effectively addressed. Concerns are discussed and acknowledged, but same issues continue.
- Employee retention is not great
- Equipment availability a challenge. Frequently spend precious time looking for equipment, causing delays in care and affecting time management.
