Pros

1) The mission is more than an empty statement. Our work makes a difference and has meaning. Our clients are mostly highly engaged and great to work with. 2) Employees are well taken care of, especially compared with other health IT companies. While it took a while to implement, every team member is able to grow their base pay, WITHOUT having to necessarily move into a management role. Health benefits are excellent, particularly a generous HSA match. Fringe benefits such as reimbursement for I-15 express pass and gym/gym equipment allowances seem minor but have a very positive impact on day to day life. 3) I am constantly impressed by mostly everyone I encounter. Most companies of this size have a significant amount of employees that feel like dead weight. Everyone here works hard and pulls their weight. It's easy to assume positive intent with other teams and departments when everyone is engaged. 4) I truly feel like my manager and leadership is looking out for me. 5) Teams in product development have a great deal of autonomy, so we are able to avoid a lot of overhead due to unnecessary processes.

Cons

1) Part of what makes my work exciting is wearing many hats, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. Many teams probably should have more resources, but I'd rather be a bit overworked on a lean team than end up on the chopping block if my project appears less profitable with more resources. 2) I highly value the autonomy in how my team operates, but recognize that we also need to get better at collaboration across products and teams. I fear that some leadership comments are pushing toward a centralized structure and methodology, and would hate to swing too far in that direction. I hope we can apply the principle of pragmatism to keep our teams happy and productive without burdening them with forms and checkboxes to track our work. 3) Working in product development, I am often surprised by how little training our colleagues in other departments are getting about our solutions. When I joined I went through a boot camp of our existing tools, and it seems that curriculum hasn't been updated for a few years. I feel that most team members, especially client-facing team members, should have an opportunity to be trained and perhaps certified in each of our products. We all should have a role in driving engagement with our customers around our solutions, and helping our clients improve outcomes per our mission.

Thank you for this detailed, thoughtful review, and for contributing to our important work in product development these past 3+ years. I'm encouraged to hear of the positives you're experiencing including the mission-orientation, the career opportunities, the autonomy, the compensation and your experience with your manager. I also appreciate your feedback on areas where we can improve, including not swinging the pendulum too far on centralization -- this is always a balancing act but I agree strongly that we need to achieve a balance here. I also appreciate the suggestion that we update our product-specific training content, which I know we're working on. Thank you also for expressing a willingness to be stretched and do more as we work to achieve profitability as a company. And I agree with your perspective regarding the benefits of each of us stretching a little more, rather than being more aggressive on headcount growth. This is a balance as well, where we also don't want to stretch too far that these positions aren't sustainable from a work/life balance perspective. But I agree with you regarding the importance of financial sustainability of positions. We'll talk in greater detail during today's all-team-member meeting about where we are as we work to finalize our 2020 operating plan, which will include some small incremental investments in a few specific areas and some small reductions in a few other specific areas. This will likely be the case every year as part of the planning process, as we've discussed multiple times over the years, as part of a robust annual planning process. In the cases of reductions, we'll strive to follow the Health Catalyst Way in rallying around any affected teammates to do all we can to help them land on their feet, either by being hired for a different, open position at Health Catalyst, or by finding a new position outside of Health Catalyst. Thank you again for your contributions to the company's product development and overall success. We'll try to not get in your way with too many centralized processes, and rather hope that you'll feel supported and appreciated in your important work. Best, Dan

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I appreciate the thoughtful recognition of our collaborative culture and the meaningful work the team does together. How we work together matters just as much as what we do. Our operating principles and cultural attributes remain foundational. To address your concerns about processes and roles, as the organization evolves, we’re prioritizing clarity in these areas to better support teams. There’s real momentum building right now, and the work ahead is meaningful. I’m grateful for you and the role you play here, and I’m excited about what we’re building together.

Pros

Great Talent & Culture: The people here are highly capable, collaborative, and committed to helping each other succeed. The partnership between onshore and offshore teams works well and is a real strength. There’s a culture of grit and stability that has helped the company navigate multiple major transitions over the years. Mission-Critical Engineering: The work involves complex data infrastructure that requires deep technical expertise. It can be demanding, but seeing these systems run successfully and support real-world operations is consistently rewarding.

Cons

Wage Compression and Retention Risk: Compensation for tenured and high-performing staff has not kept pace with the market for specialized data engineering and support leadership. In practice, tenure can feel undervalued or even penalized. This creates risk around losing institutional knowledge and operational continuity. Stagnant Career Progression: Contrary to stated expectations, strong performance ratings do not consistently translate into meaningful, market-aligned compensation growth. The process of how compensation is benchmarked lacks clarity in practice, obscuring how compensation decisions are made and what is required to advance.
