Mom and pop management style - ENG Pilot Helicopters Employee Review

Pros

Depends on location. Some bases are hourly wages with overtime potential, others are salary. Because of on call status, salaried positions can feel exploitative. National company with limited engagement by management can mean a lot of personal ownership with the contract. Contract can be very rewarding with the right news desk and crew.

Cons

On call. Living life can be hard, especially with limited backup pilots. Management can be aloof or deliberately ignorant to individual bases needs with staffing and pay. A bad contract or news desk can mean a miserable daily experience. Because of the unique relationship between pilots and the news contract client and the company, the pilot often gets the short end of the stick.

Pros

You never know what your work day will bring. There are days when news is slow and you never leave the hangar. Other days you are in the air a lot. And, some days, it's a little of both. It's a job where you definitely don't start at the ground floor.

Cons

If you have an issue with sometimes just hanging out at the office on your shift, you will most likely become bored. However, if you don't mind that, and use this downtime wisely, it can be to your benefit. Just remember, when it's time to launch, you drop everything and GO!
