A frustrating experience - Higher Executive Director Consultant Huron Consulting Group Employee Review

Pros

As consulting firms go, Huron has a unique niche in the Education and Healthcare space. There are incredible people on staff who care about the work that is being done, about their clients and about growing and developing others. This is unparalleled and a unique advantage to working at Huron. You won't find many pretentious or fratty personalities at Huron and I was so thankful for this. People are generally smart, willing to share their knowledge and friendly.

Cons

Travel is 100%. It is taxing and not for everyone. Be aware of this and that there is little room for flexibility based on your project. Huron was one of the Arthur Andersen spinoffs and it is still incredibly evident internally. Their internal systems are falling apart - requiring internet explorer, paper forms and being passed around internally from person to person because of a lack of process - shameful for a process consultancy. There is very little communication from the top and very few attempts at developing team or practice cultures. Diversity, equity and inclusiveness is not a priority for the firm. IT has been outsourced and is incredibly ineffective at solving basic issues. After resigning, I have had multiple separate issues with Finance and HR that I am still needing to follow-up on, months later. As a simple example, the organization failed to cancel my corporate AMEX. I'm disappointed to write on Glassdoor about a generally good firm, but their internal systems and processes are so behind the times and an important flag for candidates and potential clients.

Pros

Diversity, values employees, good company culture, interesting work

Cons

Relatively flat leadership structure can be a pro or a con, sometimes would be more useful to be more unified with toolset and project workflow. Nothing major for sure

Pros

Strong, motivated teams — most colleagues are talented, hardworking, and genuinely good to work with. Collaborative culture at the team level, even when leadership falls short. Exposure to meaningful healthcare IT work and client-facing experience

Cons

Leadership on EHR has been a significant weak point, with poor decision-making that’s eroded staff confidence. Whistleblowing and internal escalation processes don’t appear to be taken seriously — concerns raised don’t lead to meaningful action. Promotions often feel driven by favoritism rather than merit or performance, which undermines morale and trust in the process
