Pros
I had high expectations after the many glowing reviews about JH Kelly if found during my interview process - from people inside and outside of the company. After almost a year, working at JH Kelly exceeds all my expectations. The word "Family" has become red flag in the corporate world over the past few years as employees realize that many family companies are actually toxic families. I've found JH Kelly to embody a true positive family atmosphere at its core. I'm constantly amazed at the number of literal families that work here. The company is full of people whose parents, aunts/uncles, even grandparents work(ed) at JH Kelly - and not because their relatives are executives. JH Kelly treats us like are real people, with real lives. Our value is not defined by the sum of our work output. The president loves to ask people about their experiences, talents and hobbies outside of work. He finds honest joy in our successes and seeks out opportunities to promote our unique passions. The company goes above and beyond to care for people experiencing personal or family issues, invest heavily in employee safety at every level, and are very serious about mental health. JH Kelly constantly reinvests in the company and their people. They pay well, have generous retirement plans, profit sharing, and bonus structures. Health benefit options range from higher-deductible health savings accounts (with additional annual funding from JH Kelly) to traditional plans with low deductibles, copays, prescription costs, and out-of-pocket maximums. JH Kelly pays a very large percentage of the monthly premiums for all plans for your whole family - not just the employee. This alone saves my family nearly $1,200 a month compared to previous employer plans. They hire only union craft on all their projects (good wages, health benefits, retirement, and employee protections). JH Kelly doesn't see a lost opportunity when a budget-conscious client opts for a non-union competitor, they see honor in living up to their 100% union values. I feel incredibly lucky to have landed at JH Kelly. My only regret is not finding this company earlier in my career.
Cons
This isn't really a negative, but I will speak to it here: I can see how some new employees might be intimidated by the amount of coworkers who have worked here for 10, 20, and even 30+ years. They have relationships an bonds that can only be formed over time. Personally, I see this as an opportunity to do good work, form those kind of bonds with others, and be rewarded with a kind of company-to-employee loyalty that just doesn't exist in today's workplace. I hope I am lucky enough to still be here in 20+ years.
