Pros

There are no pros to working at the kanawha county public library unless your favorite book is “No Exit” by Jean-Paul Sartre in which case you have found your dream job or you like working in a building that is full of sex offenders, because the library does not turn away sex offenders.

Cons

Work environment is incredibly hostile and this hostile environment is fostered by a passive, ineffective management which refuses to address the problems it creates, and does not discipline or make any adjustment of problematic employees thereby creating an environment where there is no incentive whatsoever for making an effort of one’s job. Work conditions are unpleasant at best and bizarre workplace policies, mostly the whims of the rabidly misanthropic library director, make it worse. For example we are not allowed to open doors for other staff members. IF WE ARE SEEN OPENING THE DOOR FOR OUR COWORKERS, WE WILL GET IN TROUBLE. These bizarre rules cannot be broken or even altered for those whose health or well-being is impaired. Other potential job hazards include bed bug infestations, excessive rudeness from patrons, and twelve potential suicides as the members of your group, past and present, find out they can't collect unemployment. DOES THIS SORT OF LIFE LOOK INTERESTING TO YOU?

Pros

Excellent community relations, generally enthusiastic and helpful staff and coworkers, solid scheduling, rewarding work. Much more amicable/less inimical atmosphere than one would find in a retail environment. Generally a very enjoyable and rewarding work experience.

Cons

due to financial issues, management are often wearing two or three hats, meaning they are stretched thin. This meant that I rarely received in-depth performance feedback. Low base pay, although cost of living in Charleston is similarly low.
