Pros

Great firm who cares so much about their clients. I learned so much during my time at Kurman and don't believe any other experience would have done that. I really recommend anyone with PR needs use their services.

Cons

The only con is the unpaid part of the job.

Pros

I had the wonderful opportunity to intern at Kurman Communications, Inc. under the guidance and mentorship of Cindy Kurman and Lee Barrie. Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to learn how to write press releases, how to aggregate those press releases to news and event websites, how to write social media posts for clients, how to post those social media posts using programs, create media lists, write pitch letters to journalists, and so much more. Aside from the hands-on practical skills that I gained while working for Cindy, I also learned that the value of consistent and kind communication in relation to working with various clients is invaluable in the upkeep of these relationships and of a business. Not only did I learn valuable skills that I can take with me to other PR and marketing jobs, but I also was able to observe and learn about how Cindy and Lee have kept their own business running successfully for over 30 years. Therefore, I have gained a look into the entrepreneurial world as well as a comprehensive look into the PR industry. Cindy has taught me that running a successful PR business takes passion, creativity, teamwork, diligence, and lots of hard work. I have learned that efficiency and attention to detail are crucial to producing work that is sufficient for the client and valuable overall. Cindy and Lee provided me with the opportunity for my first PR internship, and I could not be more grateful for their kindness and generosity towards me throughout my time with them. From taking time out of her day to sit down with me and teach me how to learn a new program, to letting me tag along to a few client meetings and allowing me to sit in, I was able to learn and gain tons of hands on experience and transferrable skills that I know will serve me well in the future. Cindy took a chance on me when I had no previous PR experience and allowed me to learn so much, which I will always be grateful for. I sincerely enjoyed my time at Kurman Communications, Inc. these past few months, and while I am sad to leave, I know I am moving forward with more confidence ready to take on the world of Marketing and PR. Thank you, Cindy and Lee!

Pros

Working at a small firm is so beneficial to students who are breaking into the industry. Rather than being distant from the brilliant minds at the top of the company, you work alongside them. Cindy Kurman built a PR empire, among other projects. Her dedication to some of Chicago's best restaurants and non-profits is unparalleled to that of which you would find at a large firm. There is much to learn because as an intern, Cindy trusts you with writing and aggregating releases. She personally teaches you important skills and critical lessons about working in public relations. Lee Barrie, Cindy's husband and partner is equally as kind and helpful. It is an exciting time to be involved with Kurman because they are launching a second business that can revolutionize the spread of media. Cindy and Lee are an unstoppable pair. It is a pleasure to be a part of their team and learn from such experienced professionals. Interns also have their own desk, have a flexible schedule, and the espresso is always flowing at Kurman.

Cons

While internships are unpaid, the hands-on experience and personal attention is worth it.
