We appreciate that the announcement came as a shock to the team, however we would like to assure you that the leadership team did our very best to keep the team informed as decisions were made. We received questions during our All-Hands about the likelihood of layoffs for 12 consecutive months. Each time we responded (up through January of 2023) we had no plans to move forward with a reduction and responded accordingly. In fact, most of that time, ML was growing at the fastest rate in our history!
However, when the question was asked in February the response was intentionally different from prior months and focused on the need to assess the business landscape before responding definitively.
While we understand & appreciate that more notice would have been appreciated, circumstances in our industry change quickly and that means that unfortunately decisions need to be make quickly in order to ensure that our business remains healthy. Our goal will always be to make ML stronger so that we can continue to grow and retain our exceptional team.
While there is no 'good' way to proceed with a reduction, we aimed to make the announcement & transition as seamless as possible, opting to speak to each impacted team member individually after a global announcement rather than terminating systems access and sending mass emails. We value each and every member of our team and we did our utmost to provide support to team members who were impacted.
