Combined mediocrity - Computer Scientist Magnitude Employee Review

Pros

Lets you play video games all day (seriously there is a team whose members have nothing else to do) Free lunch twice a week. Provides timbits, cake, and fruits once a month. ( I think this is a pathetic attempt by HR to show they care about employees) Office is not too far form skytrain. They give you a one month training on writing a new driver.

Cons

Almost all the talented and intelligent hardworking people have left the company and apparently they have taken the good culture with them. "People generally seem unhappy, like they are waiting for the next shoe to drop." The products are loosing quality because of the immense knowledge drain, so it's either new employees or so called senior under performers (who literally don't know what they are doing and just because you are in the company for 6 -10 years doesn't mean you are technically strong ). Company lacks technical direction, no RnD team, there is no innovation in work or products and not even a single employee worthy of being a technical leader. Top management is just there to negotiate their OWN titles and packages from Magnitude. No one bothers if the pay raise even matches the inflation. They take decisions behind closed doors and keep things secret. This has created a culture of mistrust and lots of finger pointing and politics. There is no career growth and no mentor-ship from any manager, except if you are the favorite. The review process is twice a year; and the last time we had it the management said "this is just a formality". The HR person is just there to safe company's interests,. No HR support (Not interested in understanding employee needs)

Pros

The products are great technologically. The people that work here are some of the brightest, hardest working people I know.

Cons

While the management team says a lot of good things, they don't follow through. They talk about about employee development, but in my tenure here there has been zero effort made to actually develop good employees. When you are good at what you do, you end up stuck there, with no opportunity to advance your career. The company has also been rather sexist, at least historically. Women make up less than 10% of the company rank and file, and similar percentages of management. Women are relegated to "soft" roles like HR, customer success, etc. Generally there is a huge lack of diversity in the staff.
