Pros

I worked for Marcus & Associates for just under 3 years. John and Ellen have great relationships with amazing companies. I joined M&A in 2009 when the job market was horrendous but M&A had plenty of jobs with top companies because of their long standing relationships with them. John and Ellen truly cared about me and we still keep in touch. I learned many important recruitment lessons from them, things I still use every day.

Cons

If there is a con, I would say that at least when I was there, the business operated as a generalist firm in Accounting & Finance. They worked with top companies across many different industries and while there were benefits to it, at times I felt spread too thin, not having much of an area of specialization.

Pros

I worked at Marcus & Associates for about 4 years, and have nothing but positive things to say. John & Ellen, the partners of the firm, do business the right way and treat their staff well. Was my first job in recruiting out of school and I learned a lot about the trade of recruiting, but also saw more experienced recruiters come through and make good money. Family-like atmosphere, with a focus on quality and on working hard--but not the sweat-shop environment of many recruiting firms. They also place a high value on creating positive experience for both the candidates and their clients, so not pushing candidates onto clients that don't make sense. Will help you identify your strengths in recruiting and leverage that, but include you in both parts of the business--candidates and clients. Because they've been in business over 20 years have strong core clients that pay well and can make for 'easy' placements at times. Pretty adaptable and open to change. I made good money here in the heart of the recession so it is a group that I would definitely call stable in terms of earning potential. Fun people to know on a personal level.

Cons

At the time (4+ years ago), benefits were a little light but I believe they are better now and on par with other recruiting firms.

Pros

When I joined Marcus & Associates, I had 1 year of unrelated sales experience. I had a recommendation, but I like that Ellen and John took a chance on a smart kid being able to succeed in their business. Both were excellent mentors. I did as they asked and learned the business and terminology. I probably made ten thousand calls before I built my candidate pipeline and made my first placement 6 or 8 months later, but that was just the beginning. In my second full year and all years after that, I exceeded $100,000 in earnings by continuously working hard and following The Plan! This is a great business where you'll be given every opportunity to learn and succeed. You won't be kicked out in 2 or 3 months if you're doing what you're asked to do. Ellen and John will invest their time in you. After you've proven yourself, you may be given the opportunity to become a mentor for new employees, as I was, with a percentage of the new employee's success being paid to you. In a small company, that's a really cool thing. Also, everyone is very nice and a pleasure to work with. I only left because my wife wanted to live in Miami!

Cons

This is a commission-based "draw" business, so in the beginning, you will be paid but it may seem lean until you get going. And yeah, you're going to need to be good at the job to make a good amount of money. If talking on the phone isn't for you, you shouldn't be in sales anyway.

Thank you for your review. We miss you and your wife. We have since moved to a salaried model but in the long run in didn't matter because you kicked butt for only a year+ of experience and no connections in the business. We had faith in you and you had faith in us! We are now all working remote, so if you want to come back, let us know.
