Pros

I worked at Marcus & Associates for about 4 years, and have nothing but positive things to say. John & Ellen, the partners of the firm, do business the right way and treat their staff well. Was my first job in recruiting out of school and I learned a lot about the trade of recruiting, but also saw more experienced recruiters come through and make good money. Family-like atmosphere, with a focus on quality and on working hard--but not the sweat-shop environment of many recruiting firms. They also place a high value on creating positive experience for both the candidates and their clients, so not pushing candidates onto clients that don't make sense. Will help you identify your strengths in recruiting and leverage that, but include you in both parts of the business--candidates and clients. Because they've been in business over 20 years have strong core clients that pay well and can make for 'easy' placements at times. Pretty adaptable and open to change. I made good money here in the heart of the recession so it is a group that I would definitely call stable in terms of earning potential. Fun people to know on a personal level.

Cons

At the time (4+ years ago), benefits were a little light but I believe they are better now and on par with other recruiting firms.

Pros

Ellen and John taught me the fundamentals of recruiting at a staffing agency. They are both excellent at what they do and open to training those with less experience. They pride themselves on their customer service and the solid relationships they have built with both clients and candidates. While in the end I choose a different career path, I look back on my experience with Marcus & Associates with fondness and gratitude.

Cons

If you are new to this type of role it takes a bit of time to build your portfolio so you must be patient, but also diligent in your work. This isn't really a con - but more of a recommendation.

Pros

I worked for Marcus & Associates for just under 3 years. John and Ellen have great relationships with amazing companies. I joined M&A in 2009 when the job market was horrendous but M&A had plenty of jobs with top companies because of their long standing relationships with them. John and Ellen truly cared about me and we still keep in touch. I learned many important recruitment lessons from them, things I still use every day.

Cons

If there is a con, I would say that at least when I was there, the business operated as a generalist firm in Accounting & Finance. They worked with top companies across many different industries and while there were benefits to it, at times I felt spread too thin, not having much of an area of specialization.
