Luck of the draw - Sales Mark Allen Group Employee Review

Pros

+ Laid back office culture with friendly atmosphere + Good working hours + Relatively low pressure with understanding sales managers + Accessible CEO who is always willing to help + lucrative commission structure (see cons) + opportunities to progress and take on additional responsibilities (and earning potential) for good sales people

Cons

- Your experience will vary massively depending on what publications/events you are working on. Some are lucrative market leaders, some are absolute disasters that will never hit a sales target. Do your research before you accept a job offer. - Some poor senior managers who have only been promoted due to length of service - Sales revenues often take priority over editorial quality (good if you're in sales, bad if you're an editor) - Low basic salaries and if you're selling on a bad brand commission can be virtually nothing

Pros

There are NO pros to working here.

Cons

Too many to mention. More venture capitalism than publishing with most experience in mergers and acquisitions. Buy brands and cost cut immediately, destroy moral, set unreachable targets and give no assistance at all. It's a business of the 'Yes' culture. So many mistakes, so so many when acquiring brands. Untrustworthy senior management especially in operations and HR which must say a lot as they own a HR magazine!!?? If you like the 'Yes' culture you'll be fine but if you enjoy your home and private life, your mental health and your confidence DO NOT approach this business. Also noticed that it looks like some senior management are wise to Glassdoor and have rated themselves 5 stars.

Mark Allen Group Response

Thanks for taking the time to share your opinion. A few things to respond to as a representative of senior management and one within HR. We take all our feedback on Glassdoor seriously. Therefore limited access is given to this account and no self-promotion is tolerated. It is unfortunate to read about your experience as an employee and should this have been brought to the attention of our HR team, we would have tried to support you. However, we wish you well in your future endeavours.

Pros

Beer fridge on Thursday, coffee machine

Cons

The workload is very heavy, with limited resourcing relative to expectations. Targets are often not communicated clearly, and the company has a pattern of dismissing employees without compensation by placing them on performance improvement plans with unachievable objectives, followed by replacing them with junior hires on low salaries. Progression opportunities and role clarity is limited, particularly at mid to senior level. Leadership tends to promote favourites, and I have witnessed managers being protected despite repeated team turnover caused by behaviour that borders on toxic and, at times, bullying. While strategic input is encouraged, decision-making is frequently constrained by short-term commercial pressures. Senior-level responsibility is often expected without the corresponding title, compensation, or authority. Processes and priorities change quickly, which makes long-term planning challenging.
