Pros

A lot of good people have come and gone so you will get to meet some really sharp and bright individuals. They joined wanting to do good and help with the labour movement. But the good ones rarely stay. The new director represents the last beacon of hope. He is the one person who could possibly turn this ship around. If you want to hang on to a morsel of hope, he is it. He is infinitely more professional, doesn't scream or yell at staff and can actually speak eloquently and logically. Something you come to expect in a director, but this is not a given in the context of the club. Rumour has it that he is the CEO in the making. One can hope.

Cons

If you are looking to grow with this company or to do good, you can forget it. People and Cronyism This is a troubled company with some old timers (pushing 2 to 3 decades) holding the fort and refusing to let go. They literally own this place by blatantly ignoring HR practices. Directors get away with screaming and yelling at staff either during closed door meetings or out in open. Exit interviews are pointless. They are not even shy about it because the boss and culture condones it. Ask anyone, and they will validate what I've just said. If you come in thinking you can do good, you can also drop those ideas quickly as you will find out promptly the bosses have their own ideas. They know it all and they will be quick to point out that all your ideas won't work. If you decide to go with their suggestions and if things don't go well, they will quickly point their fingers at poor execution, meaning you. Then there are the ones who have caught onto how things are done at the club and they quickly adapt to the bosses. Some even say openly in meetings, "let's just tell the boss what he wants to hear, he can be easily managed". Then there are others who are seen as 'first responders'. The boss says something during a meeting, and they quickly send out an email while the meeting is still on. Lo and behold, the boss thinks the staff in question is aligned to him and super responsive and efficient. If you don't have the stomach for such nonsense, this will not be a place for you. So in the past 20 months, you can see many people come and go. We have seen no less that 6 senior staff depart and over 14 executives have also left, all in the span of 20 months. Business Viability Is this a viable enterprise? Not really. It manages to keep its head barely above water. So don't be expecting great compensation and benefits. While there is training, it is not something to write home about. So each year, financial targets are set without consultation. If you dare to tell the boss that it is not attainable, they will just tell you, "I don't want to hear it, just make it happen". So you see new budgets increase not by 5%, or 7%, 10%. but by more than 20% in some business units. If you don't attain the goals, you get poor performance ratings, meaning no bonus. Two years in a row and you are out. That is how things work so join at your own peril.
