Pros
The only pro I can think of is the people I work with. My team is hardworking and dedicated. We motivate each other despite the constant negativity and micromanagement from the Owner.
Cons
Working for Nelson Brothers has been the worst experience of my professional life. My background is in mangement, finance, and communication, yet none of my input has been valued. The Owner would argue that only his ideas matter but my performance should speak for itself. All of my properties are in the green after struggling prior to my involvement. I had to block out what the Owner said and instead rely on my industry experience/common sense. It worked. But, as usual, I didn’t receive any credit. Instead, something extremely minor was used against me to try to prove that the Owner knows best because he can’t handle not being praised. Newsflash, he’s not an expert. He does not have a background in property management. I did my homework. Just because you own a property management company it doesn’t make you an expert. Isn’t that the point of hiring us? Shouldn’t we be allowed to do our jobs? Or do you just want puppets and yes men? Someone nailed it when they said he’s a narcissist. Ask anyone in property management and they’ll agree. I left a respectable job to come here after being pursued by the Owner on LinkedIn. He promised me a 25% pay increase, structured bonuses, a 401k plan, “top of the line” benefits and a family atmosphere. None of these panned out and I’ve been with the company over a year. The culture is toxic. I’m either copied on derogatory emails aimed at Management (in front of the team) or stuck on hours long conference calls that are 90% ranting and 10% finger pointing. Nothing is ever resolved, no one is focused and everything is struggling. Everyone is scared to do anything because no one wants to be lambasted in front of their peers. This is constant, especially the gossip and so called "confidential" information that gets out, from the company splitting to everyone’s salary. At least now I know that low level employees who suck up to the Owners and lie about past experiences make more than some of the property managers I know. Speechless. Even headhunters have negative things to say about the company and it’s high turnover rate. I had to use prior job experience to get interviews. Happy to get out though. Anything would be better than working here.
