A workplace with great potential, but poor management ruined it. - Sales Associate Nordstrom Employee Review

Pros

Several assistant managers and managers were genuinely supportive and demonstrated strong leadership skills. Gained valuable knowledge about fashion, styling, and inventory management while working alongside passionate, like-minded individuals. Enjoyed collaborating with great coworkers who made the work environment positive overall. Convenient location with easy train access, though parking fees were a downside for those who drove.

Cons

Some members of management could be passive-aggressive at times, making open and effective communication challenging. The commission-based pay structure often created a highly competitive and toxic environment among coworkers. When two people are assigned to the same section but one consistently makes around $5,000 in sales while the other struggles to reach $1,000, it inevitably causes frustration and competition. Limited opportunities for advancement into other departments, and the pay difference between assistant managers and sales associates was minimal. It made sense why some sales associates stay stagnant for so many years because it is impossible to move up. Upper management showed little concern for employee safety. When customers became angry or abusive, we were still expected to treat them respectfully because “the customer is always right.”

Pros

Decent base pay, somewhat autonomous, great tip potential.

Cons

The company has changed for the worse since COVID. When I came back the mood of the entire store had shifted. Gone were the days of comradery, customer focus, and taking pride in a job well done. In its place there is a new culture of cutthroat sales, a severe decline in customer focus, and worst of all a new focus on profit over customer satisfaction. When I was told that the amount the store charged for a shoe shine was not enough to do the best job I could for a customer I knew things had gone downhill for the company. Not to mention I watch a manager prey on a mentally disabled person in order to secure a sale, when the person could not understand what was being offered. Sad that such a once great company is now just another greed ridden corporation.
