Great store, not for everyone - Sales Associate Nordstrom Employee Review

Pros

Pleasant work environment, potential to make above-average retail salary. Employees are generally empowered to satisfy the customer & customer services offered are exceptional. If you want a full-time retail job, Nordstrom will give you close to 40 hrs./wk. , but usually just under so even though they do a good job selling you their benefits pkg. a lot of hourly employees don't actually qualify for them because they fall just under the required work hours.

Cons

Other than the normal cons of retail (bad hours, low pay) be prepared for lots of competition and backstabbing among employees. There is so much pressure to sell that formerly nice people will "steal" your sales because they are so desparate. Department managers are often EXTREMELY inexperienced. There is little if no opportunity for working there part-time because of their employee ranking system; you will be considered a low performer if your sales numbers aren't the same as full-time employees. I also was not fond of the 8:00 a.m. "Rah-Rah Rallies"--okay if you are in high school, but we're all adults & the peps rallies were a waste of my valuable time. Employee discount is not generous.

Pros

Decent base pay, somewhat autonomous, great tip potential.

Cons

The company has changed for the worse since COVID. When I came back the mood of the entire store had shifted. Gone were the days of comradery, customer focus, and taking pride in a job well done. In its place there is a new culture of cutthroat sales, a severe decline in customer focus, and worst of all a new focus on profit over customer satisfaction. When I was told that the amount the store charged for a shoe shine was not enough to do the best job I could for a customer I knew things had gone downhill for the company. Not to mention I watch a manager prey on a mentally disabled person in order to secure a sale, when the person could not understand what was being offered. Sad that such a once great company is now just another greed ridden corporation.
