Pros
Good work life balance with 37.5 hour weeks and generous vacation and sick time. (Up to 45 days a year) Relative stability in normal economic years. The people are great to work with. The university cares about diversity and tries to make things more equitable.
Cons
Pay is below market standards for software developers. Women are paid less and promoted less for the same job and experience levels (or even having more). (One male senior analyst was hired as a senior developer after a bootcamp and an English degree while a similar woman with similar experience was hired on as an associate, making roughly $40k less. Other women with bachelor degrees in computer science and years of experience as a developer were hired on at an associate level also.) Layoffs are incoming. Good insurance at Blue Cross Blue Shield soon to change to change to United Healthcare. Tuition benefits being reduced. Merit increases being cut (even when "merit" increase is 3% and is less than inflation). Technology moves slowly. Processes are not industry standard.
