Pros
Opportunity to make good money,
Good benefits for health, wellness and pension plan. A fun medium to sell, prospects more likely to meet with you because of who you represent and what you are selling. Fun perks like movie and concert tickets and it’s fun to work in media. You sometimes get to meet some music artists that come in for interviews or they might come in to perform their new music for a staff showcase. Work colleagues, on air and support staff are friendly and accommodating and pretty fun to work with. It’s a good job if you have experience in the industry, if you’re a newbie it’s a pretty big learning curve, lots to learn and do but can be very rewarding. One of the best things is you get to work with such a diverse set of clients from many different genres and you’re never bored. Plus you get to learn something new about so many different industries. You can also sell out of market, meaning if you have a client that has locations in other cities you can also sell them advertising campaigns in those markets with the company’s sister mediums etc.
Cons
High budgets, cold calling, stressful.
A lot of different mediums to sell and many different budgets to attain ie: radio, digital, interactive, OOH, programmatic etc . It’s a bit like you’re running your own business because you have to input your own orders, do your own collections and do all your own proposals. There is a lot of internal paperwork that you have to look after yourself. It can also be an exceptionally stressful job if you aren’t making budget or you don’t have very many accounts. Lots of competitors in the digital space to compete with that offer better quality work as well. Support staff stretched a bit thin and things you need may take a bit longer than expected. Indecisive upper/corporate management, meaning, will try a new concept or idea for a few weeks that you need to learn and try to sell, and then flip to another new concept that you need to learn without really giving the first concept time to learn, grow or work on. Some management are too loaded down with their own work that they need to deal with to give you a lot of help if you’re struggling, only because they’re trying to keep their head above water with their own workload. You may need to lean on your dept work colleagues for advice or help with ideas at times. Tough job if you’re unorganized and not great with time management, mostly because of all the extra paperwork and internal tasks that you need to do yourself.
