Pros

Opportunity to build meaningful relationships with young people and make a genuine difference in their lives Strong sense of teamwork within the care team when the home is functioning well Good training opportunities and support to gain recognised childcare qualifications Varied and engaging work where no two days are the same Chance to develop skills in communication, safeguarding, and therapeutic care approaches Seeing positive progress and personal growth in young people is incredibly rewarding

Cons

Long shifts and chronic sleep disruption from 24-hour rotas Emotionally exhausting work with very high responsibility Paperwork and compliance tasks can feel endless and take time away from actual care Staffing shortages can make already demanding shifts much harder Decisions from senior management can sometimes feel disconnected from what actually happens in the home High burnout risk due to workload, emotional strain, and shift patterns
