- Privately owned = No accountability. The CEO and COO are also the co-founders (and husband and wife.) Therefore, they answer to no one. Remember that.
- It’s political. Want a promotion? Great! Now work OT all year (yes, even though you’re salaried), don’t use all your PTO (they’ll “say” you’re required to take at least 80 hours…), and get the endorsement of every single leader in the organization – Then maybe they’ll consider promoting you.
- Leadership uses fear tactics to gain buy in. And because many entry-level and junior employees don’t know that those behaviors aren’t normal in the workplace, it works. (But again, you can’t fix a problem that begins at the top… because they won’t take accountability)
- I'll list off a few more: Being staff aug'd on unfavorable projects for longggg times (it’s how you “earn your stripes”), no work life balance, minimal (and performative at that) diversity and inclusion, pay and benefits are less favorable than at a large co., etc.
But, if you want to work at a toxic firm and reallllly need a job, they’re handing them out left and right. And if that’s the case, keep the above in mind and definitely negotiate on salary.
