Disrespectful Management Results in Toxic Workplace - Anonymous employee Robinsons Bookshop Employee Review

Pros

Stores look great. Other staff/peers are close and have each others backs (often a direct result of combative attitudes from upper management)

Cons

I have never been treated so poorly by an employer as I had when I worked for Robinsons. The owner has a hostile attitude and is constantly belittling staff members, even when approached for assistance. The owner will often berate you in full view of customers making them (and yourself) clearly uncomfortable. Any criticisms are not provided in a constructive manner but are often personally motivated and communicated rudely in full public view. Staff are expected to work extra hours and are neither compensated nor thanked for their time. All times recorded by the JOLT app are edited to reflect rostered hours only and any time taken to close the store or do other tasks that management has requested be done is ignored. Exploitative tactics are used to get staff to perform tasks beyond their roles. Management will ask for feedback but be warned they do not really want to hear it, any feedback provided will be dismissed, ignored or rebuked. Communication is shaky at best. If you generally need assistance it is impossible to get a hold of the right people; emails go unanswered for weeks at a time and phones will ring out. Communication is often only extended by management for the combative reasons I've already mentioned.

Pros

Best coworkers ever, you'll meet lifelong friends suffering in this hell together

Cons

- Owner is pure evil and lives to bully her staff. - Stores have to promote far-right books and get almost no stock of Indigenous/BIPOC authors. - Not allowed to celebrate Pride Month. Making our own displays was cause for disciplinary action. - Owner blames low sales on managers instead of her own divisive politics and the increasing price of the books. - Creativity is not allowed, any displays you want to make that are not ordered by the owner must be removed, even if they are generating sales. - Senior casuals do not get level 3 pay rates despite opening and closing regularly. Seriously just work at literally any other place at this point.

Pros

Working with books and lovely customers! Author and book events were a blast to host

Cons

Ineffective upper management. Problematic CEO Unclear direction for in store expectations Lack of staff to cover hours and inflexibility in allowing rostering to be completed internally within stores - thus rosters were created unfairly/not aware of daily staffing needs
