Leadership is Protected Before Serving the Population - Prevention Team Member Samaritans (MA) Employee Review

Pros

In theory the mission is a wonderful one but they need new leadership to bring it to fruition.

Cons

I worked at Samaritans for two years and I went in excited to make a difference! We were seeing high rates of suicide for the Black community and while leadership put out multiple fluffy statements vowing to be racial equity champions behind the scenes they were toeing the line and refusing to make any crucial change to serve the populations who needed it the most. Staff who fought to bring any concerns to management around equity had their voices suppressed and were even pushed out of the organization. The board was quick to back senior leadership and it soon became obvious leadership would never take responsibility for their wrongs. I saw many coworkers leave with horrible mental health, sob at staff meetings with no remorse from leadership, and be singled out by leadership as someone to push out of the organization solely because they had differing views than upper management. I left wondering if this was what all organizations were like. I’m happy to say two years later I love the work I do and am in a healthy environment. Organizations don’t have to run this way. Change can be made.

Pros

Their services provided to the greater community are extremely important and excellent.

Cons

While non-profit organizations in general tend to experience staff turnover for a variety of reasons, the turnover at Samaritans was continuous and relentless, due in large part to the negative and toxic culture fostered by senior leadership. The leadership culture was to treat employees as expendable and easily discarded – senior leadership relied on the “at-will” employment cause to an extreme degree, firing employees they did not like without any reason given, and without due process that is the professional standard. Common practice is to berate and castigate not only employees both in internal and external meetings, which is beyond unprofessional and leads to employees having their own mental health issues. It was one of THE worst work environments I have ever worked in.
