Pros
I started working at Sousa Design fresh out of Graduate school under Optional Practical Training (OPT) and at the time I was looking to get sponsored for a work visa. Stephen Sousa assured me that if I performed accordingly then I would get the help I needed for my change of status; which was a tremendous offer that became a reality. During my years at Sousa Design, I have had the opportunity to work on projects of all sizes, from schematic design to construction administration. The opportunities for growth within the team are boundless and tied in to a work hard philosophy. Most of the projects I have worked on are within the hospitality realm: restaurants, bars and cafes. Nevertheless, I have also participated in some residential projects which have contributed to my personal and professional growth as an Architect in training. Additionally, Stephen encourages everyone in the team to pursue career development towards licensure through the Architect Registration Examination.(ARE) Overall, I have had the great pleasure to interact directly with clients and see multiple projects open to the public in Boston and beyond with great success; which has been a very enjoyable experience.
Cons
Being part of a small team can be challenging at times, particularly towards deadlines, but we try to work together to overcome all project demands. Additionally, since most of the projects are hospitality related then your exposure can be limited to that area. In my case that has been a blessing in disguise because I have realized that designing spaces where people can work at to bring joy to others in the form of food is a delight.
