Pros

Had a wonderful manager that cared about my success and the success of my colleagues. Wonderful colleagues and when I started there, there was room for growth.

Cons

Many rounds of layoffs. They would tell us that it wouldn't happen again during All Hands meetings and then a few months later there would be another round. The severance packages were terrible and insulting, especially for employees that worked for Spruce for a long time. Changed CEOs three times within a year and a half. The executive team was/is a total mess. They would tell us in All Hands meetings that the company was doing great and meeting goals but the layoffs kept coming. The latest CEO doesn't even seem to care about the company culture or employees at all. We maybe had two or three All Hands meetings after he started as CEO. After that, we received almost no updates on how the company was doing. When there was a meeting, he had no prepared materials and there was no structure to the meeting. There was also a lack of communication between different departments due to this, that caused a lot of escalations and issues. In 2023, they laid off all part-time customer support reps and replaced them with offshore teams to save money. While they did save money, the support for customers declined greatly which led to more escalations and issues in other departments and customers. Despite laying people off to save money, they decided to lease an office that almost no one went to or lived near. I am unsure about the future of this company and how much longer they will last.

Pros

Some genuinely talented and well-meaning colleagues—too bad they're being taken advantage of.

Cons

Spruce is a textbook example of how not to run a company. There is no strategic direction, and under CEO Andrew White, the company has gone from bad to worse according to people who are still there. Andrew is a venture capitalist cosplaying as a CEO: lacking vision, leadership ability, and any demonstrated capability to build or scale a real business. It shows. When the company laid off people under the prior CEO Steven Pho, it offered just two weeks' severance, even to employees who had been there over four years, despite clearly having the cash to offer a fairer deal. It was a slap in the face to long-time team members and a clear signal of the company's lack of integrity and respect for its people. Spruce has asked (via Carta) former employees who exercised their options to agree to issue even more share and be even further diluted so Andrew can issue himself even more worthless shares, an insult given that existing options are already valued close to zero. It's a self-serving move at the expense of the people who actually built the company. Current employees likely have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes as Andrew is probably quietly enriching himself while the company slowly bleeds out both cash and talent.
