Pros

Some colleagues are really cool and mature, fun people to work with. Since it's a real estate company, i think the phrase "location, location location" fits. Nyc location is a PRO if you like nyc, but office does not have any water or high floor views. Food is abundant, you're never left hungry here. Wine and alcohol in office are fully stocked up too. That's about it.

Cons

Bureaucracy is increasing here, while oddly management continues to foster immature office culture. Too much play here for some, while too much work here for others. Definite unfairness is very apparent here in what people get away with right in front of upper management and other managers. My engineering colleagues frequently complain they have zero to no visibility on upper management decisions and are seen by upper management as simply a commodity. Hard to stay visible in a very fast moving company where salespeople get much of the praise. Little work life balance in engineering, sales and product management though. Salespeople do deal with not being with families and friends every week sometimes 4 days a week, since a lot of travel is involved. Recently hired managers in some teams are more of micro managers than leaders who I would look up to. Lots of wasteful meetings here in which managers would rather talk jokes than actually finish meetings quickly by getting down to business. HR asks teams that are hiring to sit in on "gossip" sessions about job candidates who the company clearly isn't going to hire. Lots of time is wasted here on chit chat. Fast moving company has a lot of strict deadlines which are unreasonable and reflect upper management frowns upon those who don't put in overtime, which is needed in teams like sales, product and engineering weekly.

StreetEasy Response

In all honesty, the StreetEasy I know is not the StreetEasy described here. We currently only have a few salespeople so it's surprising to see it be such a large focus in the post. Recruiting definitely runs feedback sessions on all potential candidates we interview - this is meant to be a forum where as a team, we can hone in on the best candidates possible and make sure our hiring expectations are in line with the job req and process. We just got the results back of an employee survey that touted our work/life balance (across all functions) as one of our most favored qualities and for the second year in a row we have been selected as one of Crain's Best Places to Work, which is all based on employee feedback. Clearly your experience is different and I'm very disappointed to hear that. If you're comfortable, I highly recommend that you speak with myself or your direct manager so these issues can be better understood and addressed. We are always striving to make StreetEasy the most enjoyable and productive work environment we can and your feedback will enable us to do that. Pros

Next to restaurants, if there's one other thing on New Yorkers' minds, it's real estate. So, being part of a company whose goal is to make real estate information easier to access and understand for jaded New Yorkers is pretty cool. Whenever I say I work at StreetEasy, everyone's eyes light up and they say, "I love StreetEasy!" Or, "I used StreetEasy to find my apartment!" New Yorkers have a pretty universal feeling about StreetEasy, which is extremely positive. So, it feels good to work at a company that actually helps people's lives. Also, I'm happy to be working on a small team (around 100-ish) that is collaborative and accessible. Since the team is small, everyone's role is critical. No room for prima donnas. The company's leader (Susan Daimler) is dynamic and smart. She brings good energy to the office and people believe in her direction. Everyone is given the freedom to be creative. There is no micro-managing at all. The executive team seems pretty solid. The office is in a cool loft-like setting in the Flatiron area. Everyone has a standup desk and lunch is brought in each Tuesday. Everyone seems to keep different hours, which is cool that people are allowed to choose their hours and make their work/life cycle agreeable. A few people arrive early in the morning (8-ish), then the bulk of the team arrives around 9:30 -- some as late as 10 am, but they stay until 7-ish. Overall, a really great company to work for -- I highly recommend it!

Cons

Nothing yet. I haven't been here for more than a few months, so perhaps I'll have something more to say in the "cons" section.
