Pros

SureWest was acquired by Consolidated Communications just as I was leaving due to a disability that didn't allow me to return. The local culture in Roseville is derived from the original Roseville Telephone Company which began because ATT would not bring "long distance" telephone lines 20 miles from Sacramento in the 1920's. So there is a huge pride in this local company, regardless of who the corporate entity is. Today, I spoke to an employee who said that although some structure has changed, Consolidated Communications has treated people very well and maintained a good corporate employee-centric culture. When I was injured on the job, it was absolutely amazing regarding the level of care and concern at which they approached me on every level. I'd work for them again, if I could.

Cons

Not much. They recruit well from within, have a corporate structure that encourages employee growth. From my sales position point of view, they are excellent.

Pros

The people were friendly enough. Most came from the Roseville area and were a tight-knit group. I worked there for 6 years and met some great people. The company does support taking time off. No one ever discouraged you from taking a vacation or taking time off to care for sick children. Quite the opposite.

Cons

The company engaged in some of the worst internal politics that I have ever seen. I worked there for 6 years and had to get out. If you weren't in a clique, you didn't have any opportunity to move up. The company had a written policy of being very accepting of cross-department transfers and training, but in actuality and real-world policy, this did not happen. I would avoid working for this company until they can fix their internal structure. The pay increase was also terrible. They underpay their staff and try to avoid giving out pay raises, even when employees are given yearly reviews where their manager states they are exceeding expectations in all areas.
