Pros

- 50% discount only on in house product for overpriced product that you could pay less at trader joes or target and get the same quality

Cons

Founder. The allure of working for a woman founder, particularly one of color is something that spoke to me. However, after more than a year of being there it was clear that the founder obsessed with all of the wrong things - OPTICS. Often comparing the work of competitors, and stating in public forums that "they cant possibly make money doing this, ect" and scrolling their Linkedin for updates to see if there is any team fall out. Blindly trusting the words of male team members, publicly grilling women. Requiring leadership to read books re-enforcing commitments to the leadership team; only to then lay off the team (full of Mother's) -- without any prior knowledge -- leading into Mother's Day weekend. Only to post all Mother's Day weekend on social media how important is to her to value women, as a mother and a female founder. Real class act. Everything is done with the focus of OPTICS- there is no integrity, no real brand, no care for the greater community or her internal team. It is all fake and I blame it on the founder not having any real vision besides a marketing handle. "We are hiring", as it reads in Blank's Linkedin messaging, only after 80% of her work force was decimated feels incredibly tone deaf. Promoting the men on the team after the staff was laid off also reiterates my point. There is no clear leadership. And I would argue that Blank is a poor leader and knows nothing about running a business. She wont ask you to work around the clock (optics) but will continuously change her mind, full of start stops, only to run cold on ideas. Leaving her team to be on calls all day, deciphering her cryptic messages, working nights, and weekends. Once asked, how do you sleep at night with all of the pressures of being a CEO, " Oh, I sleep like a baby". Sums it up.

The Sill Response

We had a lay off on May 5th, and unfortunately said goodbye to about 30% of our team. Transparency is incredibly important to me as I address these points. While layoffs are hard and never come at a convenient time, there was no misleading the team as to how we were performing. Our financial performance, as well as the macro-environment, are discussed regularly in company forums -- along with the fact that we were staffed for a year of growth that has not manifested as expected. It’s true that some of those let go were mothers and fathers (also non-parents). I believe in And vs Or – you can value, support, and celebrate women and motherhood in the workplace AND you can make difficult staffing decisions. You can also have vision AND adapt as the circumstances around you change. As a company, The Sill stands at 80% women and our leadership team is 60% women. 50% of those who received promotions for taking on more responsibility following the layoff are women, and we continue to support parents with flexible work schedules and paid parental leave. All of this said, it pains me that this was anyone’s experience at The Sill and for that I take responsibility. If I’ve learned anything about running The Sill in all of its iterations over 10 years, it’s impossible to be the right leader for every one in every moment. I will reflect on and learn from this.
