Pros

- 50% discount only on in house product for overpriced product that you could pay less at trader joes or target and get the same quality

Cons

Founder. The allure of working for a woman founder, particularly one of color is something that spoke to me. However, after more than a year of being there it was clear that the founder obsessed with all of the wrong things - OPTICS. Often comparing the work of competitors, and stating in public forums that "they cant possibly make money doing this, ect" and scrolling their Linkedin for updates to see if there is any team fall out. Blindly trusting the words of male team members, publicly grilling women. Requiring leadership to read books re-enforcing commitments to the leadership team; only to then lay off the team (full of Mother's) -- without any prior knowledge -- leading into Mother's Day weekend. Only to post all Mother's Day weekend on social media how important is to her to value women, as a mother and a female founder. Real class act. Everything is done with the focus of OPTICS- there is no integrity, no real brand, no care for the greater community or her internal team. It is all fake and I blame it on the founder not having any real vision besides a marketing handle. "We are hiring", as it reads in Blank's Linkedin messaging, only after 80% of her work force was decimated feels incredibly tone deaf. Promoting the men on the team after the staff was laid off also reiterates my point. There is no clear leadership. And I would argue that Blank is a poor leader and knows nothing about running a business. She wont ask you to work around the clock (optics) but will continuously change her mind, full of start stops, only to run cold on ideas. Leaving her team to be on calls all day, deciphering her cryptic messages, working nights, and weekends. Once asked, how do you sleep at night with all of the pressures of being a CEO, " Oh, I sleep like a baby". Sums it up.

We had a lay off on May 5th, and unfortunately said goodbye to about 30% of our team. Transparency is incredibly important to me as I address these points. While layoffs are hard and never come at a convenient time, there was no misleading the team as to how we were performing. Our financial performance, as well as the macro-environment, are discussed regularly in company forums -- along with the fact that we were staffed for a year of growth that has not manifested as expected. It’s true that some of those let go were mothers and fathers (also non-parents). I believe in And vs Or – you can value, support, and celebrate women and motherhood in the workplace AND you can make difficult staffing decisions. You can also have vision AND adapt as the circumstances around you change. As a company, The Sill stands at 80% women and our leadership team is 60% women. 50% of those who received promotions for taking on more responsibility following the layoff are women, and we continue to support parents with flexible work schedules and paid parental leave. All of this said, it pains me that this was anyone’s experience at The Sill and for that I take responsibility. If I’ve learned anything about running The Sill in all of its iterations over 10 years, it’s impossible to be the right leader for every one in every moment. I will reflect on and learn from this.

Pros

There was a good work / life balance and coworkers and managers respected weekends and non-work hours. It's nice to get feedback from the customers who are happy with their purchase and the feeling of enhancing people's lives with plants.

Cons

Many people on the corporate team were laid off. Several of the full-time and freelance employees who were let go were were hired less than two months before The Sill layoffs happened. Lack of vision. Constant pivoting, redoing work, and last minute changes.

Thank you for offering your candid feedback. We can appreciate how pivoting in a rapidly changing business environment creates both frustration and extra work. Unfortunately, it’s what has been required for many businesses in 2022 due to a number of factors. That said, we're so glad to know that you felt you had work/life balance support from your manager and that you felt the positive impact that we have in our customers' lives. Reconnecting people to nature through plants; to bring life to people, and people to life, continues to be why we do what we do - even in the most challenging of times.

Pros

Some cool plants, especially the speciality items.

Cons

Do you want to work with plants and value nature? Don''t work here! The Sill only cares about PROFIT, it couldn't care less about the plants or the people working for their stores. The Sill consistently understaffed their stores and required shopkeepers to perform 3 jobs- excruciating manual labor, sales and admin. Expect to lift insanely heavy objects, work alone, train managers making more than you, and tend for neglected plants. Management does nothing to rectify egregious issues that impact employees-- we worked without AC for 2 months, employees were getting hurt lifting objects, employees would consistently work 10 hour shifts with many hours alone.

Hi there - thank you for your feedback. We are happy you enjoy our speciality plant offerings! We're sorry to learn you have a negative impression of the business - our goal is to bring life to people, most importantly our employees. We hope to shed light on areas of opportunity that we continue to grow in. We do operate with small teams since many of our shops are compact, and some shifts can be worked independently/solo because of this (especially now during the pandemic to ensure proper social distancing). Our Shopkeeper job descriptions indicate that employees will need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds at any given time. If an employee is hurt performing job responsibilities they need to alert management as soon as possible so we can follow our standard operating procedures for injuries in the workplace; if that happened to you and you did not receive the proper support, please alert the People Ops team so we can help. We acknowledge that working without a functioning air conditioner is very uncomfortable and we sincerely apologize. This issue has since been fixed. Our retail management team has been trained on proper plant care procedures from our Greenhouse team, and retail management in turn trains all new Shopkeepers on this information as well to ensure plants are healthy. Regardless of their professional background, we expect all of our teammates - especially management - to treat others with respect. Please feel free to follow up with the People Ops team so we can learn more about your concerns and (hopefully!) help rectify them.
