Pros

On one hand it is potentially great to promote from within. Attempt to provide some career path or at least lateral movement within the agency. Staff is diverse and energy is positive if not a bit hipster. They serve many communities some of which are better funded than others. Such as parole re-entry vs. disabled workforce programs. So they have money and spread it around. Pretty smart. Very nice offices both SF and Oakland. Pretty rare for a non profit service agency. Also, great clients and progressive respectful programs that work. I felt we provided a high value services.

Cons

On the other hand, hiring all manner of fringe folks with counter culture politics and attitudes is one thing but promoting them to manage staff without regard for past experience (lack) or providing proper managerial training is not smart. Lots of odd or inconsistent messages occur. The structure was highly organized but the internal cliques and posturing felt absurd at times. Everyone seemed to be new at their new positions all the time. No one wanted to admit they need help. And the elephant in the room was a lack of qualifications in many cases.
