Pros

Some peers and colleagues are honest, but that's about it

Cons

Recent Layoffs and Deceptive Practices: There was a round of layoffs in January (less than six months ago). Leadership made half-hearted attempts to reassure teams that no more layoffs were coming, but morale plummeted. We were convinced that our jobs were safe and the company was financially stable. Despite these claims and the runway numbers shared at all-hands meetings, leadership lied and conducted another round of layoffs yesterday, shattering any remaining trust. Chaotic and Incompetent Leadership: The executive leadership is utterly directionless. Decisions are made on a whim, with abrupt strategy changes that leave employees scrambling. Initiatives are dropped out of the blue, and there is no coherent vision, despite what is said during company meetings. This lack of direction is the root cause of the company's issues. Extremely Stressful and Toxic Work Environment: Working here has been the most stressful period of my life. The leadership fosters an incredibly toxic culture, filled with constant lies and superficial gestures during all-hands meetings that fail to address the real problems. Claims of transparency are a joke, masking the truth with deceit. Some team members are nice, but nothing can mitigate the toxicity and dishonesty from the top down.

Tropic Response
2y
As I mentioned in another responce, Tropic has two businesses: an Act 1 “legacy” all-in-one SaaS/services product built to capture as much market share and data as possible, and an Act 2 standalone SaaS business designed to drive our go-forward strategy by productizing act 1. 100% of the Q4/Q1 thrash placed on our business has been a process of us learning how to navigate the transition from Act 1 to Act 2. In Q1, following a reduction in force as part of this transition, we experienced a significant cultural downturn, with our engagement score plummeting from the 90s to the 50s virtually overnight. Addressing this openly, we discussed the issue, including reading through critical feedback, during our company-wide meeting. We publicly shared our engagement metrics and committed to improving our leadership approach. Since then, we've implemented numerous changes. Our engagement score has rebounded to the 70s, though it remains below our ideal target, signaling progress that we believe is crucial to communicate. Data has been our guiding light throughout this period. Tropic has achieved a 20% increase in gross margin, demonstrating efficiency gains. Our sales team surpassed Q1 targets by 15%, and customer retention has significantly improved as we migrate clients to our SaaS platform. We've also maintained a robust financial position with a healthy runway and cash reserves. We've consistently shared and will continue to transparently communicate these achievements and challenges across the entire company during our All Hands meetings. - Dave (CEO/Co-fouder)
