Pros

The only pro I can think of as I look back at my time at Tropic is my direct teammates. Can't even say "the people" because leadership was poor.

Cons

The definition of Tropic is oversell and under-deliver. Leadership decisions and experience is questionable. If you have an opinion that's different from leadership, it's best to keep it to yourself because it can / will be used against you. The culture is toxic and stressful. Every couple of weeks on the company all hands, Dave would reassure the company that "we're not failing" and we've got "money in the bank" yet there have been three rounds of official layoffs with some secret terminations mixed in between. You can imagine the false sense of security and anxiety it causes employees when words and actions are so misaligned. Top talent started seeing through the BS and left on their own accord, which is telling. I'm disappointed that Tropic took a turn for the worst because it really was an exciting opportunity. Unfortunately, they lost their sense of direction and put their people and customers last and their own agenda first.

I’ve seen a handful of posts here say that Tropic is failing. If I were a candidate, I would certainly want to know whether or not that piece was true. My responses to these reviews are so that candidates can see the full picture and draw their own conclusions about what working at Tropic is like after hearing multiple perspectives. The reality is that anyone can write anything they wish on Glassdoor. The best thing for any candidate reading this to do is probably just to reach out to people who currently work here and see how they feel. Tropic has two businesses: an Act 1 “legacy” all-in-one SaaS/services product built to capture as much market share and data as possible, and an Act 2 standalone SaaS business designed to drive our go-forward strategy by productizing act 1. 100% of the Q4/Q1 thrash placed on our business has been a process of us learning how to navigate the transition from Act 1 to Act 2. We didn’t realize how hard it would be and made mistakes as leaders - staffing, goal setting, etc. All in all, when the market shifted, we were not set up to operate as a SaaS business, and without painful decisions to manage gross margin and burn, we would have hurt Tropic’s long-term prospects for success - despite healthy overall growth. These were decisions I made that likely put some people through hell. Had I known, we would have handled this transition very differently by planning upfront, and I’m sorry to those people for the fallout from my learning curve. However, on the topic of company health, I think we need to be extremely clear and refer to the data similarly. Our goals in transitioning to a SaaS-forward model were to: (1) unlock efficiency gains, (2) unlock hyper-growth, and (3) lock in high retention Efficiency gains: Tropic grew gross margin 20% during this period and is in a very efficient spot. Growth: Sales attained 115% of our Q1 target, and retention has grown meaningfully as we migrate customers to our SaaS platform. We have also maintained a strong runway and cash position. We have shared and will continue to be transparent about these numbers with the entire company at our All Hands. - Dave (CEO/Co-founder)

Pros

Some peers and colleagues are honest, but that's about it

Cons

Recent Layoffs and Deceptive Practices: There was a round of layoffs in January (less than six months ago). Leadership made half-hearted attempts to reassure teams that no more layoffs were coming, but morale plummeted. We were convinced that our jobs were safe and the company was financially stable. Despite these claims and the runway numbers shared at all-hands meetings, leadership lied and conducted another round of layoffs yesterday, shattering any remaining trust. Chaotic and Incompetent Leadership: The executive leadership is utterly directionless. Decisions are made on a whim, with abrupt strategy changes that leave employees scrambling. Initiatives are dropped out of the blue, and there is no coherent vision, despite what is said during company meetings. This lack of direction is the root cause of the company's issues. Extremely Stressful and Toxic Work Environment: Working here has been the most stressful period of my life. The leadership fosters an incredibly toxic culture, filled with constant lies and superficial gestures during all-hands meetings that fail to address the real problems. Claims of transparency are a joke, masking the truth with deceit. Some team members are nice, but nothing can mitigate the toxicity and dishonesty from the top down.

As I mentioned in another responce, Tropic has two businesses: an Act 1 “legacy” all-in-one SaaS/services product built to capture as much market share and data as possible, and an Act 2 standalone SaaS business designed to drive our go-forward strategy by productizing act 1. 100% of the Q4/Q1 thrash placed on our business has been a process of us learning how to navigate the transition from Act 1 to Act 2. In Q1, following a reduction in force as part of this transition, we experienced a significant cultural downturn, with our engagement score plummeting from the 90s to the 50s virtually overnight. Addressing this openly, we discussed the issue, including reading through critical feedback, during our company-wide meeting. We publicly shared our engagement metrics and committed to improving our leadership approach. Since then, we've implemented numerous changes. Our engagement score has rebounded to the 70s, though it remains below our ideal target, signaling progress that we believe is crucial to communicate. Data has been our guiding light throughout this period. Tropic has achieved a 20% increase in gross margin, demonstrating efficiency gains. Our sales team surpassed Q1 targets by 15%, and customer retention has significantly improved as we migrate clients to our SaaS platform. We've also maintained a robust financial position with a healthy runway and cash reserves. We've consistently shared and will continue to transparently communicate these achievements and challenges across the entire company during our All Hands meetings. - Dave (CEO/Co-fouder)

Pros

Cool product, definitely has potential, seems to be moving in the right direction, hires great people.

Cons

Tropic faces a significant challenge: hypocrisy. H2 saw consecutive missed sales targets following a failed leadership-led strategy. This resulted in layoffs of various IC's attributed to "performance," while top executives (CRO specifically) retained their positions seemingly without taking any accountability. Consequently, a culture of fear has emerged, discouraging ambition and risk-taking, besides at the executive level. Leadership can make huge mistakes without concern. Performance metrics are tied to underperforming products and flawed strategies, contradicting the preached values of accountability and transparency.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. As an executive team, we took some bold bets in H2, and in some cases, we were wrong. Our core value of leaning into bold bets is something that I take very seriously. “We will be wrong sometimes, and we must be willing to make mistakes to achieve ambitious goals.” Rest assured, these mistakes are not made without concern or accountability. We have learned from those mistakes, and with renewed confidence in our H1 and H2 plans this year, we are seeing undeniably positive revenue results while still maintaining our SaaS business efficiency goals from 2023. I hope the last two all-hands helped deliver on your desire for accountability and transparency at the leadership level. We will continue to pull back the curtain and dive deeper and deeper into company metrics and strategy. The changes we addressed and are now implementing as a result of the feedback are things I apologize for not having implemented sooner. We will continue to monitor employee engagement and ensure that the positive trend over the last few weeks continues. Thank you for believing in Tropic, keeping us accountable, and for being excited about the direction we are moving in. Like you said, it’s time to execute. Let’s do this thing! - Dave (CEO/Co-founder)
