Pros

Training. Acquisition of a government security clearance. College. Early-career opportunity to lead and develop others. Seeing new places. Travel. Meeting new people. Testing your own capabilities and determining your own limits. Training, training, training. Firm rules and regulations. Benefits package: medical, dental, visual, vacation, etc. Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB). Tuition assistance. Non-taxed allowances, such as housing, food, etc. For people seeking a change in life, the Navy represents an outstanding opportunity to redefine their career trajectory.

Cons

Contracted employment. Low pay. Risk. Family separation. Low pay. Forced relocation. Inconsistent schooling for children. Low pay. Firm rules and regulations. While benefits package is robust, the only option is military medical, which has a less-than-ideal reputation.

Pros

It is what you make out of it. You'll have good days and bad days. It's all dependent on your leadership. That can make or break the command. Medical is free, but can take a while to get seen. You'll meet a lot of new people and could travel around the world depending on your duty station. Education benefits and training.

Cons

Medical can take a while to get seen, unless it's an emergency. If you're single, the pay isn't that great, but you don't have to much to worry about for bills if you live on base. If you're on sea duty billet, your work life balance will be terrible.
