Pros

20-year retirement. Significant promotion opportunities for people with moderate abilities, but who are happy to maintain the status quo and jump through the appropriate hoops. Reasonably nice benefits package (health for life if you make the 20-year retirement). Ability to travel and live in many locations. Great pay for low-skilled work.

Cons

Deployments. The same moderately enabled people being promoted above you just because they have longevity on their side. The vast majority of senior leadership who have been Peter-principled, are simply unqualified or remain in the Navy only because they know they have no opportunities on the outside. The need to move constantly (9 times in 12 years!) Poor pay for most technical personnel.

Pros

It is what you make out of it. You'll have good days and bad days. It's all dependent on your leadership. That can make or break the command. Medical is free, but can take a while to get seen. You'll meet a lot of new people and could travel around the world depending on your duty station. Education benefits and training.

Cons

Medical can take a while to get seen, unless it's an emergency. If you're single, the pay isn't that great, but you don't have to much to worry about for bills if you live on base. If you're on sea duty billet, your work life balance will be terrible.
