Pros

The intense deadlines here are a great way to develop valuable skills like time and people management. You gain a lot on the job, picking up transferable skills and a strong grasp of the technical aspects in your field. The NAOC and the smelter provide good networking opportunities and generally have better work environments. The Toronto and Mississauga offices offer a positive work environment.

Cons

Navigating the company culture here can be challenging. The organization is quite hierarchical, and unfortunately, there’s strong gender bias directed towards women, and people of color subtly encounter racism and bullying. These issues have been around for a while but aren’t often talked about openly. Working in the mines and processing plants can be tough for women, whether they’re in frontline roles or in supervisory and engineering positions. Sudbury has a strong blue-collar feel, and adapting to life here can be difficult for those unfamiliar with smaller cities. Many employees have traditional views, as much of the workforce is local. Career growth is slow, and opportunities for development beyond your role often depend heavily on your manager.
