Pros

Used to be a small family run, close knit company. Good Xmas do! The odd nice querk like free butties, fruit baskets but this does get boring after a while - reinvent the wheel!

Cons

Loyal staff are being forced to resign from posts due to threats of “performance management” or being “made redundant” All about if your face fits! Going through a period of wiping out those who they no longer see as the face of VC. Nepotism and favouritism now rules! Unprofessional managers who follow guidance from a hr Dept which does what it’s told regardless of the situation and who is bias, takes sides and has no understanding of what confidentiality is! Known within the area to be an unprofessional company to work for! Not a company to now join, avoid if possible!

Thank you for taking the time to review your experiences at Virtual College. We are glad you enjoyed the Christmas party, one of the many social events organised by our Sports and Social Club. Our staff are appreciative of perks like the free fruit and butties which go alongside our current benefit packages and early finish rewards. The company has gone through a remodelling of its structure to ensure that we are aligned to our customer journey. This has been the driver for the current period of change. Our HR & Training department take confidentiality very seriously and have had no formal breaches raised. The HR & Training team work according to the CIPD Code of Professional Conduct. It is disappointing to hear your negative comments however they have been acknowledged and passed onto the Leadership Team. Should you wish to discuss your comments further, please do not hesitate to contact the HR & Training team.

Pros

The dev team has a tolerant, smart and genuinely helpful set of seniors who are knowledgable enough to help on a wide array of issues and actively engage in mentoring and upskilling juniors. The tech stack is microsoft based and solid, very rich front end, it's an exciting place to work if you are a front end javascript junky. Spikes and POC drive new functionality and processes, I was rarely caught off guard with any expected changes. Emphasis is on writing quality code, which was great to see. Refinement is a continual process of 1-2 hour meetings every few days, as opposed to 4-5 hour slogs at the end of a sprint. Agile but without pretense, scrum-lite i'd say. Overall great place to work, it's a shame i had to leave due to moving with my partner.

Cons

Sizeable tech debt which was being addressed as I was leaving. Commuting is rough if you don't drive, the train is very frequently delayed. I started at the end of a quality slippage caused by management pressure, which seems to be frequent. Automated testing was sparse and slow, needed a complete overhaul, but it was being addressed with a test lead starting shortly after I left. Lack of support for C#6 is a bit odd, the null conditional operator is great and is syntactic sugar so not to be feared!
