Pros

Used to be a small family run, close knit company. Good Xmas do! The odd nice querk like free butties, fruit baskets but this does get boring after a while - reinvent the wheel!

Cons

Loyal staff are being forced to resign from posts due to threats of “performance management” or being “made redundant” All about if your face fits! Going through a period of wiping out those who they no longer see as the face of VC. Nepotism and favouritism now rules! Unprofessional managers who follow guidance from a hr Dept which does what it’s told regardless of the situation and who is bias, takes sides and has no understanding of what confidentiality is! Known within the area to be an unprofessional company to work for! Not a company to now join, avoid if possible!

Thank you for taking the time to review your experiences at Virtual College. We are glad you enjoyed the Christmas party, one of the many social events organised by our Sports and Social Club. Our staff are appreciative of perks like the free fruit and butties which go alongside our current benefit packages and early finish rewards. The company has gone through a remodelling of its structure to ensure that we are aligned to our customer journey. This has been the driver for the current period of change. Our HR & Training department take confidentiality very seriously and have had no formal breaches raised. The HR & Training team work according to the CIPD Code of Professional Conduct. It is disappointing to hear your negative comments however they have been acknowledged and passed onto the Leadership Team. Should you wish to discuss your comments further, please do not hesitate to contact the HR & Training team.

Pros

VC staff are largely good, hard-working people. Staff get fruit baskets weekly. Good reviews on this site. Note: HR do email staff encouraging them to leave a Glassdoor review,, so whilst these reviews are good, the number of reviews might be artificially inflated. Naturally, if employees are current, that could affect how candid the reviewer is.

Cons

Low morale due to the following long-standing issues: - Little or no information from the leadership team on the direction of the department to staff. This meant big projects were undertaken with no plan and as such enormous amounts of time, effort and money are wasted, which for many hard-working staff members is deflating. - Big architectural decisions made without consulting experts (the developers in the department) has made development and stability of the software difficult. - Salary had not increased adequately as staff gained more experience and qualifications at the company. Some people in IT were hugely underpaid, despite being invaluable assets to the company. The pay for newer recruits is more in line with industry which is rather unfair. Requests were made for appropriate pay rises but not met. - No defined career path or progression. Hard-working, motivated members of staff had not had applicable skills developed for many years, despite asking during 1-2-1 sessions and appraisals. Although VC allowed staff to do courses on another e-learning site, it was not always directly relevant and had no bearing on progressing in a role. - I witnessed bullying in more than 1 team in IT, some occurring on multiple occasions over a long time. I don’t think these have been dealt with properly and for the people on the receiving end, there’s very little solace. The seating in tech is very carefully planned and basically moving desks is limited as these matters are still ongoing (when I left). - The Leadership team in IT does not have the expertise required to run the department. They are not from a technical background and the department needs someone with applicable experience. - Several middle managers in IT felt unsupported and there was a sense of hopelessness for the future if the leadership team remained the same. - Customer service received by major clients is below par. I have 15+ years of dealing with customers in many industries, and I considered VC's approach to be cavalier at best, but more often reckless. Communication is poor and I witnessed more covering up than I was comfortable with when we had committed to delivering products. - The actions/inaction of the leadership team made it completely impossible for me to get any traction with plans I had for my team. I have never struggled to add value and motivate people but with my time spent mainly firefighting and personnel issues, I had no opportunity to move us forward.

Pros

Good values when they have finished arguing about about what they should be...Not that anybody sticks to any of them. Good workplace, nice incentives such as the odd butts for lunch and staff fruit baskets.

Cons

Badly managed departments, lack of communication and no feeling of progression.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We do take pride in our values and believe that every member of our team uses these values to contribute to our mission of "One Mission, One Team, One Virtual College". The team agree, we do offer some great incentives, some of which you have eluded to (butties and fruit), including a 3% matched pension and the Simply Health scheme. We have lots of evidence of progression across the business. We advertise all our vacancies internally which had led to 1 in 3 roles being filled by an existing employee. As well as this, a number of our team have progressed through a progression framework. Our current strategic plan acknowledges that internal communication needs to be further refined and plans are in place to address this. Again thank you for taking the time to leave a review and your comments have been passed onto the Leadership Team.
