I worked the night shift as a newsroom intern, and I was amazed at how inclusive the producers and directors were, and how much I was able to do even on day 1. Everyone wanted to help, I was given stories to write which were then critiqued, and I was even able to shadow reporters and anchors in the studio and in the field.
Cons
You really need to take initiative. Ask what you can be working on, what you can watch, where you can go in order to get the most out of it. Also, heed the dress code and rules you are given at the start, be professional at all times.
