Great people, great mission - Associate Professor Winthrop University Employee Review

Pros

Really accomplished colleagues, faculty who want to see students succeed, and generally want to see everyone succeed. Clear guidelines for tenure, shared governance, faculty concerns committees with the ear of the President and Provost, students who like being here.

Cons

the same things you find everywhere exist here (slow bureaucratic change - sometimes due to so many faculty hands in every decision - there are tradeoffs), but as of 2025, the school is really on the rise, new leadership since 2023 is really pushing us toward innovation, to carve out our own niche to position us well into the next decade(s), and I'm convinced we'll be growing in all the right ways as a result. Salary compression just as at every school but doing compensation studies to address internal and external equity issues.

Pros

- 'Internship' process allows for practical, hands-on experience. You get to see if you're good at it and gradually learn over the semester. - Downtime if you're not booked back to back. - Very lax environment. No micromanagement. - Opportunities to become a GA (graduate assistant) who don't work hourly

Cons

- Limited Availability. Most non-GA tutors work only about 8 hours a week. - Virtual appointments are complicated and you don't get much practice with them before getting hired. - Passing the required class does not guarantee you're hired. - Every tutor I knew was an English major, so there's not a lot of diversity in that sense.
