Xero is a company that acts like a teenager: They want to play with the big kids, but they lack the maturity and discipline to do so. This is most evidence by the disconnect from the Wellington HQ and other offices around the globe. Policies and processes hinge on HQ's involvement and, while they try to provide autonomy to other teams, this falls over as because a lot of work still needs to be approved by Wellington's oversight.
This lack of maturity is also evidenced in the silo-ing that goes on from office to office. You'll find a tight culture in each office you visit, but there's a lack of connection between the different offices across the globe. This leads also to an imbalance of opportunity. Unless you're willing to move, you could quickly hit a wall depending on the kind of work being done in the office you get hired in.
