High expectations, low pay, poor communication, shady business practices
Pros
Students are great and can be really fun and rewarding to work with. There is basically no oversight for your teaching, which can be both good and bad. It's a fine job for someone right out of college, but there are basically no opportunities to advance.
Cons
Between the schedule and the lack company culture, there really is no "team" atmosphere. Tutors are rarely able to interact with each other because of the way the schedule works, and communication from management is poor. They either do not communicate with you, or they come to you with outrageous demands for individual students. You typically work in a 3:1 ratio, so individualizing plans for students is next to impossible. A typical tutoring session nets about $180 per hour for the center, and tutors only see about $20 of that per hour even though they do nearly all of the work to retain students. They also make outrageous promises to parents without consulting the tutors who actually speak and work with the students on a regular basis. They will give specific parents special treatment or lie to them, including changing test scores. Specific concerns about students are brushed aside and rarely or never addressed. Even "part-time" employees are expected to work 40+ hours a week, and there are no benefits offered. The schedule is incredibly draining, and tutors are expected to work weekends. There are no personal days, vacation time, or regularly scheduled raises.
