Pros

Most people are really nice, and it's quite a sociable place. The desk chairs are comfy too (makes a difference).

Cons

The CEO is completely delusional, especially when it comes to admitting his faults and mistakes. There's a whatsapp group called EMJ survivors (not named light-heartedly either) which was started around 4 years ago... that should pretty much tell you everything you need to know. Also, beware the misleading reviews on here written by management. They're pretty easy to spot. Several positive reviews tend to go up within a fairly short space of time, I’m assuming partly to push the negative reviews further down the page so they’re not seen by people. So keep scrolling down.

At EMJ we work on a foundation of trust and transparency. We are completely transparent with all of the team going right back to the interview stages, where we even call one of the interviews, the values interview. The values are what we have built the business on and enabled us to have the massive successes we have achieved so far. We inform everyone of how much we are looking forward to making them Gold Medal Winners, but that will only come with hard work. We ask everyone to be equally as transparent with us and to tell how we can improve. It is for this reason, people that haven’t given us this feedback until they leave and decide to give in anonymously on Glassdoor aren’t as useful to us as the ones that still work for us and continuously give us that feedback to enable us to improve and grow every year as we have done for the last 9 years. We don’t pretend to be perfect, far from it, but we want to be as close to it as we can. We are a company dedicated to establishing a culture of ‘Gold Medal Winners’. We work hard to give our staff opportunities to learn, develop and progress. The expectation of personal development is embedded into the culture of the company, this driven approach to create ‘Gold Medal Winners’ aims to bring out the potential in all our staff and help them to achieve their goals. We appreciate that this culture of aiming for excellence is not for everyone, but if you are looking to learn and progress then we are here to support and push you to achieve your goals. At EMJ the team are the core of our business. Staff satisfaction in their roles creates the win-win opportunities for both the individual staff member and the company, allowing us to grow and create further opportunities. We've recently carried out an employee pulse survey working with The Times best place to work organiser, ‘Best Companies’ and received great feedback and recognition for our commitment to workplace engagement. It was also great to see recognition for line managers and the strength of our teamwork. We would actively encourage anyone looking to work with us to do their research and appreciate Glassdoor might form part of that. However, we would expect the sort of people we are looking for to be more thorough than doing just that and suggest to get an honest open opinion you pick up the phone and ask to speak to someone in the department you are looking to join. We’d love to have that conversation.

Pros

You gain a lot of experience very quickly Some of the people were absolutely fantastic

Cons

Working here for 18 months was honestly one of the most difficult things I've had to do. Management are nodding yes men who will do anything to stay on the good-side of the two guys who run this shambolic money grabbing excuse of a "medical journal". I felt bullied from my first minute there.

Pros

There are some small positives. But I don’t want to waste anyone’s time by giving them hope that this company could be a good place. It will never be. Because the people at the top don’t set good examples and will never be open to changing the culture. This is their playground. And all of the good elements can be found in other companies that will also value you as a human being, and have individuals at the top who you can actually look up to and find inspiring.

Cons

EMG aren’t as fun and successful as they present themselves on social media and job posts. 90% of the positive reviews on here were written by a couple of individuals who are in senior positions. They do not accurately represent the views of everyone else working there. I would highly encourage anyone who thinks of working there to look at all the reviews. Despite the fact that some of the old negative reviews are a few years old, they are still very true and represent the state of the company at this moment in time. The fact that someone wrote “if you don’t have a growth mindset or want to be challenged” as a con, is frankly ludicrous. Being ‘challenged’ in this company essentially means being taken advantage of and being mentally abused if you do not see eye to eye with the leadership team and their decisions. In fact, they team often talk about how they want to be challenged. I dare you to try it out and see their response. That’s if you’re unlucky enough to still be there. EMG keep talking about how they’re performing really well and growing fast. You only have to check LinkedIn to see that almost every post by the management team talks about this supposed “growth” and incredible culture. Let me be clear. There is a mass exodus. More people have left this company in the last year than any other company I have seen before. You will see LinkedIn posts including pictures of employees who look happy and are celebrating at the annual ball. What you don’t know is that only 4 people in those pictures (including 2 leaders) still work there. It’s ridiculous that they still use those pictures to paint an image that is fake. And the fact that the majority of those leavers are women says a lot. They are treated badly. Of course, this is always denied by the leadership team (they probably don’t realise they’re discriminating the majority of the time and need some serious training). They promote a “lad culture” which is incredibly toxic and frankly embarrassing to witness. The only senior women who were trying to do good have either been fired or left. Apparently every time someone leaves the company it’s because they want to “pursue their why” (which EMG have supposedly helped them figure out). Or if they’re fired, it’s usually because “they didn’t have our values”. Isn’t it suspicious that those are the only two excuses ever used? Then there is the sexual harassment that is always perfectly covered up. It happens all the time. It’s disgusting to say the least. So if you’re a woman who works there and likes to socialise or go to company events, please be careful. You will fall victim to men who have a duty to care for you and look after your wellbeing. Men who have children of their own and conduct themselves in ways which is truly creepy and downright unacceptable. They will take advantage of you. If you’re a man working there and witness this (of which there are surprisingly many), stop watching. Please do something. Don’t just let it happen or ignore the situation. And finally, there is the unfair and terrible benefits/salary package. Yes, they gave employees an extra 2 days off over lockdown (which they will mention at every opportunity). And yes there is the summer ball which is usually at a nice venue. But they genuinely fail to listen to what benefits employees actually value. Like bonus structures, health insurance (they’re a healthcare publisher after all…), decent maternity packages and more regular incentives that go beyond the sales team. They also pride themselves in bringing “inspiring” guest speakers to company events. Most of the time these are people who have been successful in the world of sports. So only a handful of people in the company actually find them inspiring. And the rest merely pretend to be inspired. It’s often joked about. This isn’t an incentive. We can go and watch TED talks instead. Use the money you spend on these speakers to invest in people directly. Promote them. Give them what the deserve. Create a salary structure that is actually fair and equal – because it isn’t. This company prides itself in hiring people based on values. The intentions are good but it is executed poorly. They often reward people who do nothing and take credit for other people’s work. I know I’ve said it before, but ‘embarrassing’ is the only fitting word I can use to describe the way this company conducts itself. I don’t think sexual harassment and predatory behaviours are values that anyone wants to be aligned with.
